With reference to this post, a new art space will be launched in City Place, Sunshine tomorrow as part of Brimbank Council’s urban regeneration program.
The old chemist shop will now provide studio space for 4 artists and a small gallery.
Might pay a visit in the next week or so……
For more details, read Council’s press release and visit the art spaces website.
Edited on 30 June 2012 to add: Finally visited today! We met two of the resident artists, Lia and Amie and got to have a look around the studio. The space was warm and welcoming and I quite liked the mix of working studio and gallery with pieces for sale. The items for sale ranged from DVDs to handcrafted wallets and bags, to badges, jewellery, woven baskets and t-shirts. Amie said they are about to set up a Facebook page which will help locals to keep abreast of changes in stock and various events and workshops that are planned. There is also an old travel shop across the road on Sun Crescent that will be turned into a gallery for other local artists.
I just made one little purchase today:
I’m really keen to see this approach to revitalising some of our less vibrant shopping areas work. I’m presuming the biggest threats to it are loss of council funding, community disinterest, vandalism and theft.
Lets keep an eye on it.
